Welcome to part two of “From Comparison to Confidence.” As women, it’s easy to get caught up in comparing yourself to others and doubting your abilities. But remember, your unique strengths and experiences make you valuable and capable of success. This part of the series dives deeper into practical strategies that can help you build unwavering confidence and truly shine in your consulting career.
Get ready to embrace your individuality, overcome self-doubt, and step into your full potential as a confident, successful consultant. Let’s dive in!
One of the pillars of personal development, particularly in a field as dynamic as consulting, is self-awareness. This involves a thorough understanding of your emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and driving forces. Techniques for self-assessment like regular reflection, seeking feedback, and journaling can significantly boost your awareness. I personally do a quick journaling exercise every morning. It takes a total of 5 minutes and no longer. I grab my journal that I keep at my work desk and journal the following: One to two sentences of my the vision of how my life or business looks like in the future. Why this vision is important to me. The I write down the accomplishments from the day before both in business and personal life. Lastly, I write what I am going to accomplish today to move my vision forward. This heightened sense of self not only aids in recognizing your intrinsic value but also equips you to address areas of improvement constructively.
A growth mindset, a concept popularized by psychologist Carol Dweck, is vital for consultants. It involves seeing skills and abilities as improvable through perseverance and effort, rather than as fixed traits. Cultivating a growth mindset encourages resilience against setbacks and fosters a focus on learning rather than fearing failure. I like to use the term failing foward in my house and the goal is to fail forward fast. Failure is a beautiful thing… it opens more doors to possiblibilites while effectively shutting the door on a concept that is not right for the moment. Instead of letting it pull you back it broadens your scope for Innovation if you look foward. This mindset can be nurtured by embracing challenges, persisting in the face of setbacks, and treating criticism as a foundation for growth. In other words if it didn’t kill you… it made you stronger.
Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to understand and manage your own emotions, as well as recognize and influence the emotions of others. In consulting, where relationships and stakeholder management are crucial, high EI can differentiate an ordinary consultant from an extraordinary one. It enhances communication, conflict resolution, empathy, and leadership—all essential qualities in a successful consulting career. Practical applications of EI in daily consulting work include active listening, empathy during client interactions, and adaptive communication strategies. One of the wonders of being a woman is the ability to listen in layers, this is a concept in which we can take in body language, words and contextual knowledge to see a larger picture. Some of us are aware when we do it… and if you haven’t become aware yet now is the time to unlock that super power. By doing so you are able to further help your clients and find new ways to get teams to work better together as a whole.
Continuously improving your skill set is not only essential for staying relevant in the rapidly changing consulting industry but also for building confidence. Whether it’s learning new technologies, acquiring advanced certifications, or engaging in professional development courses, enhancing your abilities reassures both you and your clients of your competence. Methods for skill improvement include attending workshops, enrolling in relevant courses, and seeking opportunities for hands-on experience through new projects. However a strong word of caution here… please make sure you always build in a plan of action on how you use these learnings. There are moments when we soak up knowledge, but don’t put it into action which actually further chips away at our confidence instead of building it up. Confidence is built by doing!
Networking is a fundamental aspect of consulting, but it can often lead to detrimental comparisons. To network effectively while maintaining confidence, focus on building genuine connections rather than measuring your achievements against others. Strategies for healthy networking include attending industry-specific events with a mindset of learning, offering help to others, and focusing on quality of connections over quantity. This approach not only builds a robust professional network but also supports a positive self-image. The most impactful event I ever attended I put in a bit of pre-work. I looked at the guest list and I made it a goal to talk to 5 people who were my ideal audience. When I spoke to them I invited them to grab coffee, sit at lunch together or grab drinks – this way I was building relationships in the moment and I felt like my time was being used wisely.
The consulting environment can sometimes be high-pressure and demanding, with difficult clients and tight deadlines. Maintaining confidence in these situations is crucial for effective problem-solving and client satisfaction. Strategies to stay resilient include preparing thoroughly, maintaining a solutions-oriented mindset, and practicing stress-reduction techniques such as mindfulness or structured problem-solving. I have an addiction to personality tests and I have taken them all, however they are powerful tools in understanding how you react in certain situations. There is one tool in particular that measures your Conative abilities — your ability to take action and helps you understand why you take action in certain ways. When I took the Kolbe test I realized that I am happiest solving problems and innovating and I need space to envision. Understanding this about myself helped build resilience. This resilience not only helps in overcoming immediate challenges but also builds long-term confidence by reinforcing your capabilities through successful outcomes.
Mentorship can have a transformative effect on your confidence as a consultant. Having a mentor provides guidance, emotional support, and professional networking opportunities, which are invaluable in navigating your career. Mentors can help identify areas for improvement, offer new perspectives, and share experiences that can prevent common pitfalls. Finding a mentor can be as simple as reaching out to a respected professional within your network or joining industry-specific mentoring programs. When I found a coach/mentor in my niche my business went from $2,500 a month to $15k a month. It is incredible what having someone in your corner will do for your business.
Feedback, though sometimes hard to receive, is a goldmine for personal and professional development. Constructive criticism helps you to fine-tune your approach and improve your consulting practices. Embracing feedback involves actively seeking it out, responding positively to it, and implementing changes based on it. This proactive approach not only improves your skills but also signals to others your commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.
Continuing to explore these strategies further will provide more in-depth insights into transitioning from a place of comparison to one of confident independence as a consultant.
As we wrap up this part of “From Comparison to Confidence,” remember that your journey in consulting is unique to you. Embrace your strengths, continue to develop your skills, and maintain a growth mindset. Utilize emotional intelligence to build strong relationships, set clear boundaries to balance work and life, and seek out mentorship to guide your path. By applying these strategies, you’ll find yourself not only more confident but also more successful in your consulting career.
